A great interpretation and an excellent transfer
This is another excellent HDTT transfer. I had not heard the original LP but I highly recommend this DXD transfer. This is now one of my favorite interpretation of this great piece.

A classic recording and performance
This performance is classic Monteux—full of beauty, with long sweeping lines and ravishing orchestral color. Monteux manages a nice mix of tempi, the contrasts among which heighten the drama. As Daniel G. says below, this is not the "hifi" demo approach to this music, it is the music for its own sake. Ken Cross and Kingsway Hall deliver to us the classic early Decca sound: rich, detailed, lots of depth, with excellent taut bass and extended highs. Is it as utterly transparent as a modern recording might be? No, it's not. But it has a golden beauty to it that is a delight to enjoy. No, it does not sound "tubey" and softened—leave that to the sound of the early LPs. No, the sound of this analog tape as transferred to DXD is completely unlike the early LPs in this respect. (As is true of all of these early Decca and RCA analog tape transfers in the HDTT catalog.) A welcome addition to my library. Thank you, HDTT.
Like I Never Heard the Piece Before
Monteux and the engineers take it easy on the "hifi demo" approach and instead focus on the music and the story. Everything is handled with exquisite balance and rythmic freedom bordering on Jam session improvisation. The outcome, in "full, rich but never shiny" sound, is a revelation. This may be the only time I have listened to the piece from start to finish in decades. The treasures just keep coming, and its nice to hear this performance (and the piece itself) for the first time in HDTT's faithful transfer.

Outstanding sound.
Almost as good as the original LP.
