In this performance, conductor René Leibowitz reveals a surprisingly modern vision of the Pastoral. Though widely known as a leading theorist of twelve-tone music and an uncompromising advocate of contemporary composition, Leibowitz was equally capable of remarkable clarity and discipline in the Classical repertoire. His Beethoven interpretations, made with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, remain among the most distinctive of their era. Rather than embracing the heavily romanticized style that was then prevalent, Leibowitz anticipates later, historically informed approaches: his tempos are fresh and flowing, his articulation clean, and his orchestral textures remarkably transparent.
A central part of this recording’s enduring appeal lies in its exceptional sound quality, achieved by the celebrated Decca engineering team, working here on assignment for Reader’s Digest, who originally commissioned the sessions. The audio was supervised by Kenneth Wilkinson, regarded as one of the greatest classical recording engineers of the 20th century. Wilkinson’s mastery of microphone placement, his instinct for natural orchestral balance, and his ability to capture hall ambience with vivid realism are all unmistakably present.
