This performance is amazing and masculine. It is rooted in the essence of the work that was composed and may be a Russian-style performance. Recording enters a good level as Meloydia of this age.
Kalinnikov was a nationalist composer whose life was cut short by tuberculosis. Yet he managed to write significant music that impressed Tchaikovsky, who encouraged him. He never heard this symphony performed and that is sad. What is not sad is this music. The first movement, after it folk-song-like intro is positively happy music, even bubbling. The second movement is heartfelt and engaging, using spare orchestration with major 7th chords to create warmth. The 3rd mov (Scherzo) is dance-like ending in a hearty romp. The final mov. becomes a frenetic, thematically fragmented march. The recording is first-rate Melodyia from the late 60s. Not a great symphony, but interesting and worthy. Recommended.
