In my opinion the best Schubert Symphony ever recorded.
Malgré un tempo général un peu lent, l’équilibre orchestral reste celui d’un chef de légende. Divines longueurs à savourer longuement!
Schubert's great C major has a lot of competition in this era - Szell, Munch, Krips etc. This one falls around the middle of an admittedly very good pack. It's a good reading, albeit somewhat deliberate at times. Decent to good sound, typical of Columbias at this time.
This performance is one of the best performances by Walter's recording. It's a very excellent thing that the sound quality became very clear by remastering by HDTT.
I've got to be honest- I would buy anything conducted by Walter with the Columbia SO. Lovely symphony, super remastering.
