As fine a capture of the sound of an organ as I have in my collection

Virgil Fox is always a mixed bag for me, but hearing him play the huge organ of Riverside Church, where he was organist at the time, is an unalloyed pleasure. He draws on the entire range of sound of which this organ is capable—which is most substantial. All of this is cleanly and clearly captured by Bob Fine's placement of his microphones. It is as fine a capture of the sound of an organ as I have in my collection.

Virgil Fox At the Organ Plays Johann Sebastian Bach

good organ recording, nicely transferred, same old organ music. there needs to be many more organ recordings that are not the usual organ fare.

Virgil Fox At the Organ Plays Johann Sebastian Bach

Many of the works on this recording are old favorites and Virgil Fox has alway done a great job - in my non-expert opinion. On that basis this would be a great recording. Where I was a bit disappointed was in the sonic quality. Specifically when there is a lot going on. I am a great fan of the recordings made by Everest using 35mm magnetic film. An approach used by Command Classics in this recording. Mercury Presence also has done some 35mm magnetic film recording that in my view are close to the Everest recordings. Given all that, this recording was just not up to the same level of clarity, depth of sound stage, and detail that I have come to expect from this type of recording.

Virgil Fox Play Bach at Riverside Church Organ

I've kept an off-center pressing of the original Command LP for decades, just to hold onto Fox's Trio in G, a model of how to turn a heavy-breathing monster into a rhythmically upturned dance. Only with the CD do I realize how heavy and oppressive Fox's registrations are--trumpets and winds just blast away in most of the selections. I was surprised too by how dry the recording is--practically no resonance . . . in an old church? But the Trio, ah! I just listened to it 3 times in the car! It's like jazz, like bopping. And wait till you hear him play a fugue on the pedals at 60 mph!
